About the event

OYSTERS, SALT, AND WINE OF STON

This is an excursion to the western part of Dubrovnik County, the ancient city of Ston, and the peninsula of Pelješac. The City of Ston has the 2nd largest fortified walls complex in the world (just after the Great Wall of China). The area is known for its oyster and mussel farms. The Pelješac Peninsula is a well-known Croatian wine region.

Your first stop will be after a 60-minute drive from the hotel. You will visit Ston Salt pans, one of the largest salt factories which still uses the ancient way of salt producing. Ston salt pans are the oldest in Europe and the largest preserved ones in the history of the Mediterranean. The tradition of harvesting salt has been passed on for over 4000 years and since then salt is produced in the same way with only the assistance of the sea, sun, and wind. Solana Ston consists of 58 pools divided into 5 groups as the whole salt-producing process has to go through five stages which lasts one to two months depending on weather conditions.

Your second stop will be in the Oyster farms of Mali Ston. There, you will embark on a Dalmatian wooden boat to take a short sail to the oyster farms where you will learn about the processes of farming and harvesting oysters. With a prosecco in your hand, you’ll have the opportunity to taste oysters pulled straight from the water in front of you.

Following the oyster tasting our boat will take you to the next stop – Lunch at a family Tavern. Your lunch stop is only 10 minutes away at a local “Konoba”; which in Dalmatia means “Tavern”, a place where friends and families meet to enjoy a meal in a relaxed atmosphere. “Konoba Ficović” is a seafood restaurant that showcases the Adriatic fish caught the same day it’s served.

Lunch at Konoba Ficovic is also our last stop on the Peljesac peninsula from where we will head back to hotel and finish this tour.

Approx 60 min drive back to Dubrovnik. Duration is 5-6 hrs.
