Review the Travel Tips & Packing List

Review the travel tips and packing list below to prepare for departure!

TRAVEL TIPS

  1. Acclimating to the Elevation

    • Drink plenty of water - before and during the trip, aim for a gallon of water a day.

    • Limit alcohol - this can contribute to dehydration, making altitude adjustment harder.

    • Increase electrolytes - pack electrolyte packets to stay balanced.

    • We will be slowly increasing our altitude to help with the adjustment, so try not to stress too much - we will land in Lima (500 ft), transfer to the Sacred Valley (9000 ft) visit Machu Picchu (8000 ft) before transferring to Cusco (11,000 ft). The hotels will have cocoa leaves to chew and tea to drink that can also combat elevation sickness.

    • Consider bringing altitude medication (like Diamox) if you are prone to altitude sickness!

  2. Cash & Gratuities:

    • USD is widely accepted and most places take credit cards, but having some cash on hand is helpful.

    • Gratuity suggestions - plan to tip 10% for guides on optional activities. The suggested gratuities per couple:

      • Lima Walking Tour - $35

      • Lima Biking Tour - $35

      • Lima Cooking Class - $50

      • Cusco Silver Smith Workshop - $20

      • Cusco Cooking Class - $40

  3. Packing: We highly recommend bringing only a carry-on suitcase and one personal item due to frequent travel between locations. We will be taking a domestic flight from Cusco to Lima, baggage allowances on LATAM are:

    • Personal item

    • Standard Carry-on (22” x 14” x 9”, max 26 lbs)

    • Checked bag (up to 50 lbs)

  4. Dress Code: There is no dress code for this trip, therefore, we recommend dressing casually for this trip. Think athletic /casual wear during the day, with a relaxed but put-together style for the evenings. For our farewell dinner, men should plan to wear dressier shorts, pants or nice jeans with a polo or other collared shirt. Women can choose a casual dress or a blouse or nice sweater with a nice pair of jeans, pants, or a skirt.
